Freyja Fristad is a Wiradjuri print-based artist who lives and creates work across Dharawal and Gadigal land (Sydney, Australia).
In her printmaking practice, Fristad utilises the lined-bitmap (halftone) to bridge the gap between photography and print reproduction. At its most fundamental, the bitmap allows for an accurate photographic replication of the image to be transferred onto linoleum, and then carved for printing. Single- layer relief block prints typically lack the ability to convey tone. However, the varying thickness of the lines in Fristad’s work results in a moiré effect which, from a distance, can display an almost photorealistic image. This optical interference is visually similar to the flickering of a digital screen or computer monitor.
Fristad’s practice-led research is deeply informed by her navigating the deprivation of cultural knowledge and information within her family. By sourcing captured commercial stock images of readily available, mass-produced domestic objects and presenting them as metaphysical vessels, Fristad expresses feelings of grief over her cultural identity loss. The white ‘voids’ present in her prints symbolise the enduring experience of cultural dislocation within Australia, and the loss of Indigenous information, artefacts, and cultural knowledge.
In addition to her explorations of cultural themes, Fristad produces prints that depict representations of nature. She captures the alluring features of the Australian landscape, drawing inspiration from her local environment in the southern suburbs of Sydney. Growing up between the Royal National Park and the Georges River, her childhood experiences have been closely intertwined with her connection to the natural surroundings of the Dharawal land.

Hannah Caprice – Survival skills
Sheryl J Burchill  Jarruka Diburr  2024  Etching / Mono Print  Edition of 35  76cm x  56cm    My people are Bama of the rainforest from the renowned Daintree region. We are the Kuku Yalanji. We collect food in the open forests and wood lands across to the Great Dividing Range; we harvest and hunt on the sea, in the mangroves, the rivers and the creeks and shoreline.The Balji is made from Kakan (black palm) or Jilnknan (river grass). Our women; my grandmother, mother and aunties collected, gathered and leached poisons from nuts and seeds using this very versatile vessel. Inside my basket I have a collection of Jarruka eggs. The eggs have a soft brown coloured shell and are the size of a duck egg, with a bright yellow yolk and strong in flavour. I have dug the large mound nests with our Jalbu-jalbu; to find these eggs. The hens make their nest in the forest with the leaves, vines, branches, dirt and wood.
